YouTube: Roosevelt Island PSD Search

The above video of Roosevelt Island PSD officers was posted on YouTube by "RooseveltIsland10044". The video shows the officers searching the contents of the individual's backpack, dropping the contents on the ground and then returning the contents to the individuals' backpack.

According to Public Safety Director Keith Guerra the individual stopped was arrested for narcotics possession after being observed using a controlled substance. I would add that Mr. Guerra provided this detail upon my requesing more information regarding the video's content.

  1. Why would you advertise for someone like this. Obviously he has been summonsed or arrested by Public Safety and has a bone to pick with them. This is just the type of negative publicity PSD needs right about now, when they are working hard to change their public image.

  2. I would like to point out that public safety has been doing a great job lately. I took a moment to speak to some of their newer officers recently and some of them seem to have a great police background and knowledge of law enforcement. I welcome them to our great island and cannot wait to see some real crime fighting this summer!

  3. Security has gone to far with power. as a 11 year resident of the island they have gotten so power crazed it scares me a little 1 they have to many people working there and they need to chill out and don't give them any courtousy they don't deserve any.

  4. Real crime fighting: rolling around on segways, issuing tickets, and making scenes... Get real, PSD are over hyped!

  5. William, your cynicism is what will prevent a better relationship between the PSD and the community. Writing tickets is part of enforcing the law. It's what keeps our pedestrians safe and parking available for the residents who couldn't find anywhere to park in the past. From what I've seen, they are more courteous and professional than before. It's easy to throw stones but I'm sure if you need them, they'll be there to help you out.

  6. Writing tickets is only part of the law because someone wants it to. Part of the law also used to say people could tell blacks where to eat, drink, go to school, etc. Just because it is a law doesn't mean it's right. Most of the people in city jails are there for minor drug and alcohol violations, which eat up millions of taxpayer dollars and waste hundreds of hours of police and psd time filling out paperwork on a incident that won't even be tried in court. It's good to keep in mind though that the police on the street don't make the laws, it's just there job to enforce them...they have families to feed. I'm sure most of them would rather be doing serious police work instead of hassling wheel-chair bound citizens for smoking weed (or whatever he was doing).
