Abstract Exploration of Island Ruin

The above YouTube video by ChristosNYC is of a former hospital on Roosevelt Island which I must assume is the former smallpox hospital but which could be of another ruin since demoslished as noted below.

Currently the access to the ruin is under tighter restrictions due to injuries sustained by two RIOC PSD officers who were chasing unauthorized intruders. In other words do not attempt to dupliacte the images on this video.

Per the videographer:

"abstract exploration of now demolished ruin of abandoned Victorian style hospital on Roosevelt Island in New York City's East River. Shot as part of Graduate Film program work in the early 1990s. "

Wanted: One Roosevelt Island Gypsy Woman

If you are a Roosevelt Island gypsy woman, between 41 years and 50 years, you are wanted for a role in a movie to be filmed on the island on February 3rd.

Actually the ad states:

Director: Katrina Sorrentino. I am currently a sophomore and this is my first Sight and Sound Film Project at NYU. The film is going to be very short, 16mm, black and white reversal film, no sound. It will be a quick shoot on February 3rd in the afternoon. If you're interested please contact me. I will provide you with a copy of the footage when the film is complete.

This female character is an eccentric looking gypsy who comes up to my main character, snaps a polaroid of him, and then writes on the bottom of it 'content.' She is sort of a teller of moods, a human mood ring if you will. I want her to look quirky and wise.
If you are interested in the part contact Katrina Sorrentino HERE.

Video: Roosevelt Island - I Cubed

"A short film directed and produced by Phanat Xanamane, Eugene Kwak, Seung Lee, and Seung Oh for a course called Reading New York Urbanism at Columbia University's Urban Design School. The title I-Cubed refers to the Infrastructure, Identity, and Isolation attributed to Roosevelt Island's (New York City) transportation features. " - Per YouTube description.

Interestingly I cannot turn on the sound if there is any. Direct YouTube link. Posted by phanat81. I think this woudl be infinitely more interesting if they captured the actual audio or posted their comments or interviews of those they met along their journies.

Fordham U. Students Examine R.I. Housing Issues

YouTube Video Posted by drtoulouse

At first when I watched the above video it seemed like the Fordham University students were under the impression that Roosevelt Island was dominated by public housing. But as the video progresses and focuses on Roosevelt Island (4:04 minute mark) it becomes clear that the students are aware that private development is one of the island’s biggest issues. Look for their interview of Geoffrey Fishman, Manager of Roosevelt Landings, formerly known as Eastwood. Mr. Fishman discusses the effect of the open market on the island.

It will be interesting to see Hunter College’s Access RI’s take on the same issue as their larger study progresses throughout the coming months. FYI, Access RI is not only about physical access to Roosevelt Island but also to services, housing and various other issues.

"Under Island” The Beast That is Roosevelt Island

poster

How the beast below Roosevelt Island or rather that is Roosevelt Island came to life.

The below Under Island video is from the 2004 art and performance art project of the same name.

“Island of the insane exposes unknown animal!

Crew of three discover the secret of Roosevelt Island, a Utopian city built on a living, breathing mass of land.

Roosevelt Island, NYC.

Sightings of otherworldly beings are not uncommon in New York City's East River.

Foggy images appear regularly in aerial photographs of the region but substantiated evidence has yet to be found.

October 5 th we spoke with crew member, Carrie Dashow who says "the sonar readings are straight up and down!" as she reads from an antiquated tremor transfer device. She is crouched down between the stove and dinette table, covered with piles of historical documents, in her 1976 dodge camper van affectionately referred to as "USM" (Unseen Machine).

Spilling out of the van a knotted mass of wires and cords leads us to Dashow's colleagues, Jesse Bercowetz and Matt Bua , as they work from a makeshift raft, dredging the river bed for clues.

The adventurous threesome met while working on the island. Dashow, a self-proclaimed intellectual explorer is investigating the islands extrasensory influences as well as turbulent history. Bercowetz and Bua, surveyors of the underworld, have excavated bits and pieces of living matter, unidentifiable sludge as well as things residents of the island have discovered missing.

After months of patient watching and persistent digging they find themselves knee deep in the age-old mystery of the island. Although skepticism builds a tumbling case against their findings, nothing will stop these enthusiastic adventurers as they dare to prove that the creature does exist - even if their latest proof leads them head first into the unknown without a paddle.

Come see the findings of Under Island on exhibit as part of Romantic Detachment at PS1/MoMA . Oct 16th - Nov 7th 2004 “

Subject: PressHD.com RIOC Nomination Coverage

Hello,

I want to inform you about my new website, PressHD.com, which will have video coverage of the Roosevelt Island Elections. I'm an island resident and also a graduate student at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. I interviewed RIRA President, Matt Katz, for the first story which explain how the island got to this point. The first story was shot in standard definition but subsequent stories will be shot and will stream in full high definition. I'm launching an island-wide advertising campaign, so you'll see posters and ads going up.

Sincerely,
Kim Lengle

Student Film: Urbanism

I wil admit I have no idea what "urbanism" truly is. This video was titled "Assignment 2: Three Sites" and the description offered only "UD Fall: Roosevelt Island, Hunts Point and Red Hook".

The tag lines offered at the close of the video states

"Now that the waterfront has finally been released from its industrial duties how do we prevent new economic / urban models from hindering public access?"

"Do these economic / urban models get compromised by the processes of a bureaucratoc structure that diffuses the public voice and ultimately stunt a "New Model City?"

Encarta:

ur·ban·ism [úrbÉ™ nìzzÉ™m] noun
Definition:
1. city life: the typical way of life of people who live in a city or town
2. study of cities: the study of life in cities and towns

Roosevelt Island: Infrastructure vs Development: The Chicken or the Egg?

In this video three Columbia University students look at two age old questions and use Roosevelt Island as part of the question. The questions asked are (1) Does Landuse define Bboundary, or Does Boundary define Landuse? and (2) Does Infrastructure follow Development, or does Development follow Infrastructure? An interesting video.
