Temporary Pedestrian Walkway Across Roosevelt Island Bridge Still Under Construction

The temporary pedestrian walkway across the Roosevelt Island Bridge is still under construction and not expected to be ready for pedestrian use until next week.. Despite my skepticism, according to one construction worker / supervisor it should be ready next week.

Based on these pictures, taken on Monday December 3, 2007, it is not clear whether the current “grate” decking of the bridge will be paved over to create a smoother surface for pedestrians or whether the current decking will be what pedestrians will have walk on. Based on how it feels to even drive over the grates I am hoping that some sort of temporary pavement is laid or else walking or driving a wheelchair over the bridge will not be an easy feat.
