What's Behind East Side Officials Asking for Green Manhattan Tram Station Roof?

In a joint letter signed by virtually every East Side elected official the request was made to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation to incorporate into the design of the new Manhattan Tram station a green roof.

Why is this request coming now? Yes, RIOC is still in the design phase but it is interesting that the chorus has just started when the process discussing the new Tram and its stations has been going on for well over a year to two. If the overhaul had kept to its original schedule this question would be way late and impossible to even consider. My fellow blogger the Roosevelt Islander infers that it is because East Siders perhaps don't like the current design in some form.

For me I am all for "greening" our neighborhoods and construction practices but I say to these elected officials if you are going to push this at this time RIOC has a right to ask for the additional cash to make it happen. Let's see who is first to float a bill to increase the funding for the Tram overhaul for a green roof over another project they are currently backing.

I am in a cranky mood today so I apologize to each of the elected officials as the goal is admirable but I question why this project and why now and not earlier.

  1. The politicians are being politicians. Let the professionals at RIOC do their jobs. They've been working on this project for a long time and have kept the public in the loop every step of the way. I haven't always agreed with RIOC, but I like what they're doing with the Tram.

  2. Amen to that. We need a new Tram. The designs look really nice.

  3. At a public meeting early in 2009 RIOC was boasting about the piles of cash they'd managed to obtain for this project pre the crash... Sufficiently huge that they were billing uber architect Renzo Piano as slated to design. I think they've got quite enough $ to defray the very modest cost of a green roof and walls on both stations. As for the "review" process, the first design (no Piano but confected by what is nominally an engineering firm) was floated in May, then withdrawn in favor of a new design by a firm whose previous credits are predominently suburban commercial structures and a parking structure in Queens. We can do and deserve far, far better.

  4. how about new affordable housing. i wish all you high income people would move off the island this island once was for mixed income now it is all high income as roosevelt landings no longer takes sec.8. thanks to you people who can pay these high rents . i hate you all . this was a great place to live for low and middle income but no more. we are getting pushed off the island as the new owners of these building only want high income . i hope the owner of eastwood loses the buildings and someone buys it and puts it back to affordable housing .you want to know what is funny .well the only apartments he is getting market rent for are all on sec.8. most people without sec. 8 move in and in 6 months they move out . so the only reason why he is getting by is because of us people on sec.8 in which sec 8 is paying the market rent its funny because he no longer welcomes sec8 people . lets hope he loses the buildings and they will be put back to affordable housing like they should be

  5. mike you are so right . i get sec.8 and i am paying 2400 a month and this is with sec.8 i have 2 bedrooms.y now a person down the hall from me in a 2 bedroom is paying 1500 a month . because they are in lapp. see when she gets a raise on her rent it will only be 3 or 4 percent but see with sec.8 my raise will be 30 percent each and every time my income goes up . now i see why all the people in the eastwood building committe got the lapp because i know for a fact some make much more than i do but they do not want to pay 30 percent of their income like i am doing . see ron vass and joyce .you knew what you were doing .see sec 8 is really for low income people not people making 60 70,000 and up per year . because you then must pay 30 percent of that income in rent see the lapp was a great idea for all of you on the ebc. you got away with a fast one and the rest of us got f;;; thanks
