The Loss of Open Vistas

While I agree with everyone that adding on street parking to Roosevelt Island is fantastic it is a shame that another beautiful view looking out onto the East River will be lost. In the above picture the leaves you see on the ground in the street will soon be replaced by cars obliterating the view for those walking along the Southtown side of West Road / Street or whatever it is currently named. Yes there will always be the promenade to walk along and I recognize we need these spots but you can't argue that once a view is gone it is gone. Yes we have far greater issues to address on this island but it's a shame when such things are lost.

You may recall that I took issue, along with many others, that that the planned allee of trees that will adorn the Four Freedoms Memorial Park will destroy the 360 degre open views of Manhattan and Queens. Yes the trees will undoubtedly be beautiful and we have been told the trees will never be so thick to block the view fully but again a loss is a loss.

  1. That's what the riverwalk is for. It's not like everyone on the island drives giant tanks. How much of the view is it actually covering? Relax.

  2. Thanks for responding. I am not talking about the view of the River. Just the walk itself. Without the cars on that part of the road we feel less like being in the City. Further up Main Street we are so closed in by the buildings on both sides. Here in the above picture without the parked cars it feels like we have escaped the City. That's all.

And I will relax. Thanks for posting a comment that is not about "us vs them" or about your hatred for Ron Vass.

  5. Those spaces are not really accessible to anything. Parking on the island should be limited to dropping off and picking up people and baggage - not for handicapped and connected people to warehouse cars. Those new spaces serve no purpose.

  6. I love how people expect 9 new buildings to have only a few spaces for parking. Anyone that lives in Southtown is aware that there is no way to park there now. These spaces are needed badly.

  7. You are absolutely correct they are needed. No argument here re that fact.

  12. I Read through your comments and it's shocking at the degree of racism and hatred being spewed by so called "long time" residents - it's parking, dogs, yuppies, people with money - btw the same people supporting the tax base to subside your low to middle income housing.

It clear you have a remarkable the sense of entitlement and petty bitter issues seem consume you. What you is suggest only "certain classes should be "entitled" to living in a nice parklike setting to raise kids and have nice water views.

Cities are living entities and evolve over time. Stop channeling energy at people income or status and start liking yourself a little mo.

  14. Roosevelt Is. is changing, but I think the good changes come with the bad. Now, we'll be getting a new Memorial park, and the hospitals will be shrinking soon. Sounds like a win-win. Growth of the new buildings will be slow and probably 7+ years away. The new buildings also make the Island look more like New York. I'm not sure what the architects were thinking when they designed north-island.

Per parking, any long-term parking needs are satisfied with the MotorGate. Street-side parking is for short-term and drop-off needs. As long as we charge enough for the street-side parking that it subsidizes the MotorGate and keep cars on the island to a MINIMUM.

Also let's make it a requirement that all the MTA Queens buses must be electric before they can travel on Roosevelt Island! It's the Queens buses exhaust that makes it difficult to jog and bike on the island.

And honestly, I don't think the rent has been going up here. Rent has come down through most of the city.
