360 Degree View from Southtown Dock

The below image is by Orangeadnan from Flickr. To see the full size 360 image video, shot from Roosevelt Island, the below image is based on link HERE. By the way I love how in the image it almost has a sun dial feel to it where you see Adnan's images appear like hands on a clock.

FYI, it is this dock (NYT image directly above) which should be upgraded to handle ferry traffic from Roosevelt Island as it has the size and proximity to the central subway / tram transportation hub that exists for the island.

Octagon Dock – Winter – 360º View

The above video was found on YouTube (by DIEGoMOL80) and is a 360º view shot from the "Octagon" dock across from the DaySpring Church here on Roosevelt Island. The video starts with a view of the East River (West Channel) and Manhattan. It's a bit clunky and quick but does what the videographer wanted to capture the moment.

Blackwell House Back Porch - The View

Roosevelt Island's Blackwell House Faces Queens but most residents know the back porch, which faces Manhattan, as the view of the house they see from Main Street. This video is the view from the back porch.

Videos of Escalators: Variable Speed and Standard

The first video below is a quick video showing the difference in speeds between slow at 15 feet per second to that of the standard 100 feet per second as taped on Roosevelt Island. I was not yet able to capture the transition from slow to standard. Direct YouTube link.

The second video is a quick tour of the upper escalators without venturing down to the track level. Watch for future updates. Note that construction currently is blocking off one pair of escalators ES 412 and ES 415 from the street down to the lower mezzanine.

The Views from Goldwater Campus …

Last July there were articles , news stories, as well as my own blog posts regarding a long term proposal that would result in the Goldwater Hospital campus being closed and the facilities merged with Coler Hospital at the North end of Roosevelt Island. The above video shot last month shows a brief glimpse of the views of the East River and Manhattan currently enjoyed by the Goldwater Hospital community.

If Goldwater were ever razed this property would be extremely valuable to NYC on the open market. As this is City property, occupied by a City Hospital, the usage of the land is not subject to the GDP that was signed by NYC when the bulk of the Island was rented to NYS.

Residents would be up in arms about infrastructure issues and the fact that the current transportation systems could not handle the added growth and patient advocates would have concerns egarding whether patients at both hospitals would suffer due to a merger.

Cow Happy? Roosevelt Island’s Last Cow…

I don’t really know if the last cow on Roosevelt Island is truly happy. We pass her every week and see her standing there in the window at PS / IS 217 and we wonder if she longs for the days when she was outside standing among the City she was created for. If she does, she is being teased as she stands by her window day in and day out facing the East River watching life go by.

She may or may not be comforted by the students of the school within which she is kept. Students in the K-8 school do look at her as their own. I am sure the kindergartners show her much more love than the eighth graders but I am sure there are many older kids that love her too. I know my own kids love her and we always must say hello as we pass her.

My Roosvelt Island Tram Video - 360 Degree View

I have watched a lot of Tram videos and many of them are great. I realized my video / image blog would not be complete if I did not contribute to the library of Tram videos that continues to grow with each tourist that passes over the East River.

So here's my entry. Nothing flashy. Just a video of a nearly empty tram allowing me to capture a continual rotating 360 degree view as the tram glides on her tracks across the river one Sunday morning.

Manhattan Park's Park: 360 Degree View

Same Video on YouTube

Just across Main Street from Gristedes and Motorgate lies the Manhattan Park residential complex. These buildings, as well as 2-4 River Road, are actually the only residences that don't have a Main Street address. River Road is more akin to a very large circular driveway that the buildings share, as it is only one way, but it is a legal road on the books of New York City.

In the Spring and Summer the park bounded by River Road and Main Street provides a great green area for individuals to just hang out and enjoy the breeze and abundant shade. The trees at this time also afford for some of the lower apartments a break from the direct views of Motorgate.

The park's center has views of Manhattan between 20 and 30 River Road and is lined up approximately East 74th Street.

The Octagon Playground: The Good & The Bad

Today I walked with my kids up from the Church of the Good Shepherd all the way up to the Octagon and back. I was quite amazed they did so well. Our goal was to play at the Octagon playground which they enjoy.

The structure at the Octagon playground is by the Gametime company that RIOC’s Donna Masly indicated is involved with the design and eventual reconstruction of the new playground which will be replacing the Castle playground (currently gated off). They are also the builders of the playground apparatus at the Grandpa Al Lewis playground, the Riverwalk toddler playground, and perhaps at Manhattan Park (I don’t recall on this one). I am a bit concerned that having one manufacturer will prevent these parks from having any individual character but so far the kids are not complaining.

THe above video shows the viewer the settng the playground is surrounded by. The video was shot from atop the tallest structure in the playground. From the playground you can see the East River. the Prow, the Dayspring Church and of course the Octagon complex itself. On Sunday mornings you can enjoy the singing coming from the Church.

It’s a nice two part playground with a rock climbing theme on one side, designed for 5 year olds and up, and a mixed boat theme on the side built for 3 to 5 year olds. The “younger” side is used by the Bright Horizon’s Day Care center located at the Octagon which accounts partially for the Stalag 17 gates separating the two sides. But you wonder did the center fences have to be built so high?

Another issue at this park, and a pet peeve of mine as evidenced by recent posts, is in regard to gate locks. Two of the internal locks (between the play areas and the central bench area) are either shot or non-existent and one exterior lock (from this center bench area to the street) of the same design no longer lines up between the bolt and the mechanism. According to one resident parent it appears that the management company rather than having a real locksmith look at these locks is simply having a non-professional solder on some additional metal each time with the hope of getting by.

All I can say is parents don’t appreciate this but at the moment they don’t seem to be able to get management to do anything about it. I am not sure if RIOC has any power here. I am also not sure if an insurance liability issue can be raised but its just plain shoddy and could result in another Bright Horizon’s child getting loose and this time lead to a lawsuit (which did not happen at the Riverwalk MSKCC when this happened to them).

I did not intend this to become a playground review and critique but as a parent of kids who live and play here it was bound to happen (and will continue to do so).

Another 360 View from Southpoint Park

This video was shot from Southpoint Park on Roosevelt Island. The video clearly shows the fantastic views this park offers of Manhattan and Queens. While I can support the goal of creating a memorial here to Franklin Delano Roosevelt the prospect of destroying this 360 degree view would be a travesty. I usually am one to always want more trees but to add them here and block these views would be criminal. Can we honor Teddy instead and leave it like this?

DOT: Roosevelt Island Bridge Listed as "Fair"

Based on the NYC DOT’s 2006 Annual Report on the condition of NYC’s bridges the Roosevelt Island Bridge is listed as FAIR. According to the report approximately 58% of all “structures” fall into this category which is the largest category percentage wise. Granted learning the only constant source of egress from the island is only listed as “fair” is not great news but we should expect that within the next few years that the rating should jump to “Very Good”. This is due to the fact that the bridge will soon begin a major reconstruction project.

Per the 2006 report:

The reconstruction of the bridge is scheduled to start in March 2007. The estimated construction duration will be a total of 36 months with approximately 8 months’ lead time. The project’s scope of work includes rehabilitation of the existing mechanical and all of the electrical systems for the lift span, rehabilitation of the bridge operator house, installation of safety fences on the sidewalk, replacement of the street lighting, resurfacing of the approach roadways, installation of pigeon proofing systems and repainting the entire structure. The project will also include the installation of a dedicated right hand turn into southbound Vernon Boulevard in Queens, and the construction of a new back-up generator building under the Queens approach.

The aspects I am most excited about are the resurfacing of the sidewalks and the safety fences. Sometimes when walking over the bridge the sidewalks on the span just seem shaky and some segments of the fence are just to wide for my liking when traveling with kids.

I can't say if they actually started in March but the only activity I have seen is the construction of the trailers on the RI side of the span equivalent to the 4th level of Metropark and the staircase they built from that side down to the ground.

My First Southpoint Movie Experience: A Video

I was a few minutes late to Southpoint so I missed my RIHS Visitors Center Kiosk video montage but what I did see is a very professionally run movie night. RIOC should be congratulated. And the weather was great making life great for everybody. Attached to this blog post is a short 2 minute video giving the viewer a taste of what attending a RIOC movie night provides.

Both the picture and sound were great and I state in the video above the views from your seats are priceless. As I have stated in prior posts RIOC chares nothing to those attending and all of the movies are open to residents and non-residents alike.

Once the bus arrives at the South end of the Goldwater Hospital Campus I walked with a large group down the lighted path towards the screening. I should point out before entering Southpoint a large sign announces the future of Southpoint and the parkland planned. Unless I missed it very little is stated about the planned FDR memorial as part of that project.

Before you get to the movie the lighted path takes you past the former city smallpox hospital known to most residents as the Renwick Ruin. With the spotlights on the ruin the eerie feeling of ghosts descends upon you which would be great for a Halloween film fest if RIOC ever were to sponsor one (hint hint).

Once I got to the screening area it became clear that if you want a good seat you better get there early and bring a late picnic dinner. RIOC provided popcorn during the showing but you should bring your own food so you don’t have to get up during the showing. I believe that full height folding chairs are not allowed but beach height chairs were OK. As I said above I was late so I never got a full view of the audience.

The next movie on 8/18 is Funny Girl starring Barbra Steisand and I plan to have the baby sitter arrive early so we can do the same.
