Tram Retirement Party & Last Rides

The current Tram cabins are being retired once the Tram overhaul begins with this Monday's scheduled shutdown. So a party is being held beginning Sunday night at the Riverwalk Bar & Grill after which folks are heading onto the Tram presumably for Monday's 1:45 am Tram to Manhattan and 2:00 am return trip to Roosevelt Island. Sounds like fun ! I will be home sleeping as babysitting after midnight gets expensive.

Berlin on Roosevelt Island ?

4/16 - 12:30 pm Updated for Last Paragraph:

Back on April 6th, I reported that according to a post on Curbed that some sort of Spacebubble will be making a stop on Roosevelt Island but no information existed as to what event the bubble would be associated with. It appears now that according to The Pop Up City the possible appearnace of a bubble would be part of an expo titled

Spacebusters’ (April 16-27), which deals with the work of German studio’s Raumlabor and Plastique Fantastique. The exposition called ‘Berlin in NYC’ starts with ten consecutive evenings of events in an inflatable pavilion in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Roosevelt Island.

After dropping into the Roosevelt Island Visual Arts Association (RIVAA) on my way home I confirmed with the folks in the gallery that RIVAA is indeed involved with bringing the bubble to Roosevelt Island. The date is either 4/18 or 4/19 and they were not sure what works were to be exhibited in the bubble. They also confirmed, to their understanding, that the bubble would be set up on the Rivercross Lawn across the street from Blackwell House.

Curbed: Giant Bubble Coming to Unknown Island Event

According to a post on Curbed this afternoon the above Spacebubble will making a stop on Roosevelt Island but no indication what event it will envelope? Roosevelt Live at Riverwalk Commons? Southpoint Park?

I hope this thing can handle many kids bouncing on it at once or they will have a security perimeter as I know my son at a minimum will want to give it a good kick. So do I for that matter.

ROOSEVELT L!VE - Full Schedule Released

Double Click to Enlarge

The folks who are putting together ROOSEVELT L!VE have put out the full schedule of groups to play at Roosevelt Island's Riverwalk Commons from May 23rd through September 5th and it looks like it will be a busy 15 weeks of concerts. Not being anything remotely close to being a hipster I have no clue as any of these groups are. I will be honest I am glad I don't live facing the Commons area.

Nonno's, Duane Reade, and Starbucks should clean up quite nicely with that amount of foot traffic. You have to give Hudson / Related credit for doing all they can to bring foot traffic to the island to see their new buildings and hopefully set up apartment tours. Maybe after the concerts the visitors can even schedule some rappelling time down the sides of the buildings.

I just hope the MTA holds to its goal of not disrupting weekend subway service while the tram is off line. Kudos to the concert promoters for highlighting the F Train service.

ROOSEVELT L!VE - Summer Concert Series

Last October, on Saturdays, it was KidFest on Roosevelt Island's Riverwalk Commons, this May it will be ROOSEVELT L!VE. According to a NY Press blog post, starting May 23rd, this new concert series will kick off and run through September 5th.

The question is will the concert series do as well as KidFest did with no tram starting July 6th? The web link provided so far only allows the the reader to subscibe to email updates.

A Wedding at Southpoint Park

All I have to say is you have to go see these pictures by Jerry Yoon Photography of this wedding at Roosevelt Island's Southpoint Park. I have never seen a personal event like this at Southpoint and I have to say if this is the first wedding at the site this couple did it right. they look amazingly happy and the groom is a lucky fellow as his bride looked radiant.

If pictures like this alone do not justify stopping the FDR Memorial from destroying the views I don't know what will. Can we convince RIOC that if it continues to rent out Southpoint Park for weddings perhaps they will see that the space is more valuable than any old FDR memorial can possibly be to the community? Of course if they actually take up this idea we would want to limit the number of dates the park is taken out of public use. If RIOC agrees then we can keep the land undeveloped in the manner most of us love today.

Fireworks Crowd Dispersal Offers Evacuation Lessons

As I mentioned in my post of yesterday evening I did not attend the fireworks this year but I purposely positioned myself to view the crowds when they arrived at the subway station to leave the island. My goal was to see how the MTA and the NYPD handled up to a few thousand bodies wanting to leave the island at one point in time. The picture I posted from Flickr confirmed what I fully expected that being a pile up. But what the picture does not show is how these separate departments worked together to funnel the attendees through and why it took for the last individual stragglers up until 11:10 pm to enter the subway station.

My goal was to watch what worked and what might have worked better with an eye towards a possible evacuation of Roosevelt Island if an emergency or weather condition force such an evacuation. There are only three ways off this island and only the subway has the capacity to transport large numbers of residents far enough off the island which would be needed. Sure the Roosevelt Island Bridge could accommodate a large number of residents to tranverse it by foot (few residents have cars overall) but that leaves those residents in the middle of nowhere with out a mass transit answer on the other side.

Overall I believe the MTA and NYPD did a good job of ensuring that the flow of riders did not result in one continuous burst of individuals trying to access the escalators, elevators, stairs and platforms all at once which could have lead to accidents at any of those points. The flow of individuals was staggered to allow for easy access down to the platforms and also to ensure the platforms were never overly crowded.

The first thing I noticed was that the MTA set up three defined entrance points (1) Metrocard holders (2) individuals with strollers, and (3) Roosevelt Island residents. The Metrocard holders entry point snaked a bit off towards the East / right away from the entrance and then back to the entrance to prevent the line from simply being a straight line back from the door to ensure no straight rush could be made for the doors. The RI residents line allowed residents immediate access no matter what with no delays which was a great feature.

The man in charge was Mr. Clayton W. Conaway Sr. who holds the position of New York City Transit General Superintendent for District #4 – Parsons Archer Stations Operations. In addition to about a 8 to 12 uniformed officers at the station I counted about another dozen MTA personnel directing traffic flow in and outside the station all apparently deferring to this man’s direction. He and his staff constantly were viewing the monitors gauging the flow of individuals once they passed through the turnstiles to determine when and how many more individuals to let enter the station.

As Mr. Conaway states in the video the MTA’s primary focus was safety and not speed and upon watching this applied in action from the many vantage points afforded me that evening I belief it worked well. Sure there were many individuals that would have like to get through faster but in most cases I believe the MTA staffers handled themselves and the crowd well. Sure at the initial choke point there were a few instances of riders that climbed over the wall that tested the MTA staffers patience but the woman I saw at the forefront of the line appeared forceful but never disrespectful despite everyone dealing with the rain which thankfully was never truly a downpour.

At one point there were in effect two Metrocard holder lines one which snaked towards Duane Reade and a second which bordered Main Street. Entrance from these lines alternated and neither line seemed favored. The MTA staffers were quick to let families with strollers and elderly through and in most cases the Superintendent with an eye towards keeping traffic flowing directed these individuals through the gate entrance rather than through the turnstiles. I also noted that for the few minutes I wandered down to the track level that MTA reps did indeed hold trains in response to rider needs and traffic flow.

The only suggestion I heard from both MTA staffers and NYPD officers that perhaps two distinct lines should have been created for Manhattan/Brooklyn bound riders versus that of Queens bound riders to better control line movement with that of platform levels and train arrivals. It seemed the logical step and an idea for next year.

From the many people I spoke to and observed most seemed in reasonable spirits and no one seemed truly put out. I do believe many had no clue what they were going to encounter when they left but to those individuals I say what else could you have expected as you either came in with the crowds or watched the fireworks with them next to you unless they though the event’s attendance was mostly residents.

Overall I believe the MTA met its goal of processing everyone through but with the overriding goal of safety first. I can’t think of anything else that could have been done to make it less painful that it had to be. Processing 2000 to 3000 persons through between 9:30/9:45 pm though 11:00 pm did not seem overly burdensome or unfair to anyone that passed through that station.

As for whether these same tactics could be applied to an evacuation it is unclear as then one would expect a lot more irritation and underlying fears on the part of the residents trying to enter the station and the MTA personnel and in addition to individuals evacuating would be carrying a mountain of belongings etc which always clogs up the works. Given enough time though if residents heed warnings to leave early if proper staffing was present at the station a good chunk of residents could get out this way. If an emergency came out of nowhere timewise and that is main option open to us we may have a big problem.

Roosevelt Island Day - 2008

June 21st Movie Night: "The Never Ending Story"

I have been informed that RIOC has scheduled "The Never Ending Story" as the first film in the Roosevelt Island Summer Movie Series to be held at Firefighters Field. The series begins Saturday, June 21st at 8:45 pm for thepre-show and a 9:00 pm film start. Firefighters Field is located just across from the Tram and the Riverwalk buildings currently under construction.

As reported in prior posts the movies have been moved from Southpoint Park this year to Firefighters Field to allow more residents and guests access to the site as the gravel path and incline made it difficult for many to attend.

Video: 2008 Health & Fitness Day - May 17, 2008

Last weekend's Second Roosevelt Island Annual Health & Fitness Day sponsored by RIOC was a lot of fun. The weather was perfect and all the kids had a blast.

The blowup jumper / slide, see the video, was the perfect size for younger children as was the swings on the merry-go-round. My only hang up for the day was the idea that Zog Sports, I believe it was them, was giving away bottle openers and lollypops which seemed contradictory to the day's theme. The free smoothies were great and quite refreshing.

I missed Scott Stringer's official remarks but it was nice to see his appearance on Roosevelt Island. I think he saw the opportunity to meet a number of his constituents and we certainly hope to see more of him in the future. Earlier in the day former Mayor Dinkins was on hand and we certainly appreciate his participation suporting the junior tennis outreach segment of the day's actvivities. That's two years in a row for Mayor Dinkins. Thank you Mr. Mayor.

The large stage seemed underused and perhaps next year some of our local performers shoudl be pressed into service for a large scale "Simon Says" and other healthy exercise programs. Maybe this happened after lunch and before 4pm so if it did fantastic.

I don't know if Dora was at a Health & Fitness day event but we did run into her on the street which was cool for the kids.

Nov. 30, 2007 - Wheelchair Charities Annual Christmas Gospel Show at Goldwater Hospital

Coler-Goldwater Banner

WheelchairCharities Inc. Banner - Full

I know absolutely nothing about Gospel music but when I saw the below poster and saw that the show is sponsored by Wheelchair Charities benefiting Coler-Goldwater Memorial Hospital here on Roosevelt Island I knew the show must be worth seeing.

PA280320

Double click the picture to see a larger view of it.

As noted on the poster the scheduled performers include Byron Cage, Jerry White & The Fellowship Choir, Jay Caldwell and the Gospel Ambassadors, and the God Sons of New Jersey. That just sounds like a lot of great music.

We have a lot of great charitable foundations on this island or benefiting island residents and they all deserve our support, physically and monetarily. I have to admit that when I see the back of a wheel chair and it reads donated by Wheelchair Charities or the full size blue school bus with the same message it just makes me smile because there are few charities like this one that you can see the results in your own backyard. Without this organization’s work and that of the staff at Coler-Goldwater many of the residents and patients at Goldwater would never get outside to enjoy this Island and the amenities it has. For a patient to be able to enjoy the outdoors with for example a new chair on their own terms can only help them in their rehab or just getting by dealing with what life has thrown at them.

So if you plan to be around Friday, November 30th, add this concert to your calendar for the music and the chance to help a fellow resident via the cost of your ticket.

Are Your Roosevelt Island Ghouls & Goblins Ready? The Halloween Parade is Almost Here !

If there is one place in NYC that should access to the lost souls of NYC it should be Roosevelt Island. With oor history of being the home to the lunatic asylum, the prison, the almshouses you would have thought Poltergeist should have been filmed here in the first years that Northtown was built. Either way make sure your ghouls are dressed for Saturday's parade!

Roosevelt Island Halloween Extravaganza – Oct 27th, 2007

Halloween Poster vRI360

As the poster states on Saturday October 27th, Roosevelt Island courtesy of RIOC and the management of Eastwood, will play host to the Annual Halloween Extravaganza. In addition to a parade fronted by the New York All-City High School Marching Band there will be activities galore. The parade starts outside Blackwell House and proceeds North on Main Street.
