Adoptable Roosevelt Island Cats

Based on the dates three of photos were posted on Flickr, June 25th, by the local Roosevelt Island Cats group I'd assume these cats are adoptable today. Doubleclick image to expand photo.

The link to these photos on Flickr is HERE and the link to the official RI Cats site, ISLAND CATS, is HERE.

Island Cats requests volunteers for feeding North Station on Roosevelt I.

The following is a reprint of a post made by a resident on the OctagonRI.com website. I thought it worth publishing here. Thanks Julie and Jennifer for letting everyone know about this!

Hi, Folks: Many of you are probably familiar with the wonderful organization called Island Cats. Briefly, they are a non-profit, volunteer-run organization that performs trap-neuter-release and adoption of stray cats on the island. Last year alone they performed surgeries on over 50 cats and were able to adopt over 25, releasing the feral (and therefore unadoptable but now sterile) ones back into well-managed colonies on the island.

They have two main feeding stations on the island, one of which is at the periphery of the ball field near the Octagon. The station consists of two sheltered water and feed areas, with several "condos" that the cats use to stay warm in the winter. These stations are completely run by volunteers, who feed once a day (dry and canned food). Most of the volunteers buy their own food to use and feed once a week or so. However, if finances are of concern, individuals have said they could provide the food. It literally takes 10 minutes of your time.

I perform the Sunday feedings and get a great deal of joy seeing them come running up when you whistle! If you think you could be of service, please contact Jennifer Dunning at
ri.cats@yahoo.com. They are in particular need of folks for Weds and Thursday, so if you are a stay-at-homer or only work part-time, you would be perfect! Thanks for your consideration. Jules

Orphans International and Domestic Cats - Support Always Needed

I missed two events yesterday that I had hoped to video parts of for this blog (1) The Orphans International Benefit Concert and (2) The Island Cats Adoption Event. The great thing about each of these organizations is I know neither will turn away support today, even after these events, if you are inclined to give it, whether it be monetary or otherwise.

Note: Each of the above images ran as ads previously in the September 8, 2007 issue of the Main Street Wire

I can say based on the Flickr side show of the cats that were available for adoption, there were a bunch of real cute cats , so if I had gotten to the event I am sure my kids would not have let me leave without adopting one or two friends for our current feline family member. Check out the slide show and contact Island Cats to see who is still available.

If anyone has Flickr photos of the Orphans International event please let us know.

In The Papers: The Wire - Sept. 8, 2007

The September 8, 2007 issue of the Main Street Wire is available on line for those looking to begin their weekend early. The top headlines include:

(1) RIRA Sets February “Plebiscite” To Propose Nominees for RIOC”
(2) Oklahoma City Survivors Will Join Islanders at Tuesday’s 9/11 Ceremony
(3) Six Merchants Get New Leases in “First Step”

Inside the Wire you will see a letter to the editor (page 3) from RIRA Communications Chair Frank Farance continuing his crusade to force the PSD to obey its own rules. A picture of that wheelchair bicycle I reported on Aug 3rd this summer is on page 8. Various articles recall 9/11 with pictures and memories including a picture of the Wire issue that first covered the tragedy. Orphans International advertises, on page 9, it’s 9/15 benefit Concert set for 7pm at the Manhattan Park Theatre. Page 16 offers a combination ad / announcement from Island Cats regarding their upcoming 9/15 adoption event.

As normal expect to see your free issue of the Main Street Wire delivered to your apartment door handle or mailbox this weekend.
