Donating Your Old Tram Tokens ?

Among the Roosevelt Island items that makes the rounds over at eBay are the old Tram tokens that were used prior to the Tram being connected to the MTA MetroCard system. I wonder how many of these old token are still in drawers across the Island.

If we set up one of those large water cooler bottles at the Visitor's Center once they re-open how many could we collect? Would be an interesting display. Perhaps then the Historical Society could sell them for $5 a token to the tourists.

No Ivy League for Roosevelt Island

I had not heard of any plans for an Ivy League university to establish an outpost here on Roosevelt Island but apparently one group is ready to fight for the common man against such an idea.

For information about purchasing a patch 10 are currently available on eBay via The Netherlands.

We are currently awaiting a reply regarding the history of this effort to keep Roosevelt Island free of the dreaded Ivy League. If however a highly endowed Ivy League university wants to restore the Renwick Ruin as an educational facilty and work against FERI's plan to block the 360 degree views of Southpoint please apply immediately

Roosevelt Island Match Book - Hot Item on eBay

After last months surprising eBay auction of a vintage Roosevelt Island match book for just under $10 another auction has popped up for another Roosevelt Island unused mint issue match book. Like the last match book this one includes the tag line "400 yards East of Sutton Place" but also includes the phrase "Manhattan's Other Island " on the spine which was rubbed off on the earlier auction. The coloring is also in much better condition.

At the Buy it Now price of $9.99 it is sure to not last the week. So act now !

Mystery Photo: Roosevelt Island Tied to Sutton Place ?

On eBay today there is a Roosevelt Island matchbook cover up for auction. What is interesting about it is that the cover includes the phrase “400 YARDS EAST OF SUTTON PLACE".

Does anyone know why a Roosevelt Island matchbook was created much less printed with a reference to Sutton Place. The phone number on the matchbook looks familiar but is apparently hooked up to a fax machine.

Would You Buy a Lighthouse in a Box?

I have always been intrigued by e-Bay and everything that gets sold on it. The above Roosevelt Island Lighthouse miniature was available only to members of the Harbour Lights Collectors Society and was retired in 4/2002. For this edition 20,000 copies were produced.

I have never been a big fan of chachkas / tshatshkes, inexpensive trinkets or souvenirs, but I have been playing on e-Bay long enough to know that such items can go for a fair penny when collectors are involved.

My question is would you buy such an item for yourself or give it as a gift?

Roosevelt Island on eBay Tonight

I must admit I am no stranger to eBay and buying other people’s stuff even if I truly have no need for it. No one truly needs 38 different sets of the book “Lord Of The Rings” but eBay enabled me to assemble such a collection. So as someone who shares a passion about Roosevelt Island and has no issue surfing what is offered on eBay I decided to see what is up for sale / auction tonight on eBay. The above slide show is pretty much everything I found.

The items pretty much focus on the history of the island including historic photographs, engravings, books and historic post cards. Most are selling via “pay it now” and not up at true auction. Some are labeled Roosevelt Island and some are labeled under Welfare or Blackwell’s Island.

The priciest item selling this evening at auction was the Lego Spiderman box set which includes 355 pieces of Lego enabling the builder to recreate the scene where Spidey rescues MJ from the Green Goblin as well as those of us who were on the Tram for that scene. Unfortunately in this model the Tram does not detach but it does move back and forth on the track provided. It sold for $42 before $15 in shipping fees. The above photo of the Lego set was photographed at the Octagon offices of the Roosevelt Island Historical Society where one such set was donated (for historical purposes obviously).
