Images: Southpoint Park from Queens West

somac

The above image is by SOMAC from Flickr and features a view of the Roosevelt Island not always seen and I am guessing was taken from one of the residential buildings in Long Island City's Queens West development based on the angle.

The structures visible starting from the lower left include the Smallpox Hospital, Strecker Labs, and Goldwater Hospital. According to the Flickr post the shot was taken on September 24, 2008.

View from the Beekman Tower Hotel

Roosevelt Island : South of the QB Bridge

My wife and I had lunch this past Friday at the restaurant "Top of the Tower" in the Beekman Tower Hotel located at East 49th Street and First Avenue. As opposed to most guests we chose a view of the East River and Roosevelt Island. No surprise there. The food was very good and the lunch prices quite reasonable.

Great views of the island and of the East side in general. I expect to post addition pictures on Flickr in the coming days. The above photo can be seen fully HERE and the full set HERE once they are posted. I can only imagine the views at night.

Aerial View: Roosevelt Island and the City

AerialView_lazazuz6_flickr

Roosevelt Island can be seen in this aerial photo down by the lower left corner of the photo. This photo looks at NYC from the North looking South.

When you look at a photo like this and can see the topography of the area and the East River you just wonder how Roosevelt Island ever came to be and why the East River as an estuary formed as it did.

The full photo of this view was taken Lazarus6 and can be viewed on Flickr HERE. It is worth linking through to read the location info provided by the photographer if you are unfamiliar with the area.

Photo: USAF Aircraft Flying Up East River

Aerial View 2004 with War Planes

The above photo is part of a collection photographed by Victoria Arocho Photography and presented by Rocka Rho Publishing on the website for the 2006 Bethpage Federal Credit Union New York Air Show at Jones Beach. It is an amazing photo and really cannot be appreciated unless you view it HERE for its full size.

The planes starting from top middle rotating clockwise are the A-10 Thunderbolt, the F-15 Eagle, the P-51 Mustang, and lastly the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

For those of you outside New York I am sure you are surprised by the thought of an airshow on Long Island but then again maybe not after all Lindbergh did take off from Mitchell Field and Bethpage Long Island was home to Grumman Aerospace for more than half my life and as any Grumbag can tell you it was the birthplace of the Navy F-14 Tomcat. This does not even address great airfields and other originally Long Island based companies such as Fairchild.

Aerial View of Roosevelt Island from E44th Street Hotel

The above video of East River views was shot from the Millennium Hotel located at One United Nations Plaza, on 44th Street between First and Second Avenues. The music is not my style but the aerial view of the river and the Southern half of Roosevelt Island is not something we get to see everyday.

Direct YouTube Link to video posted by FlyTheBlueSky

This video starts over the Hudson and works way across Manhattan where starting at about 48 seconds you can clearly see Roosevelt Island. By the time the video stops RI is almost at the center of the screen.
