Asthma Alley, Playgrounds, & Roosevelt Island

This is a great little playground and one of only two public playgrounds on Roosevelt Island that have gates and locks but I am always amazed that this island does not have a higher percentage of asthma among our kids or the adult population.

The power plant in the background, in Long Island City, was formerly owned by Keyspan and known by many as Big Alis. For many in Queens it is believed to be the source of their asthma problems and hence the reason many in LOC refer to the area as Asthma Alley. If Roosevelt Island did not have the breezes associated with the river those issues might be ours as well. To my knowledge there has not been any kind of c omprehensive study of island residents or our kids in years, if at all.

The crazy thing about this picture, by Jerome Bailly on Flickr, is that if the picture was taken from the other side of the park you would see a great view of the Queensborough Bridge in the background.

Mystery Photos – Photographed From Where?

Today’s “mystery photo” contest asks from where on Roosevelt Island each of these images were taken?

The top photo is by STG54 and was taken and uploaded onto Flickr on August 10, 2008. The structures seen in this image all blend together in the shadows adding a few seconds to determining where this shot was taken from.

The bottom photo shows the Ravenswood energy plant, formerly owned by Keyspan and now owned by Trans Canada, but I admit I am unsure what the structure is in the foreground with all the windows. This photo was taken by Paul Antonson on August 9, 2008 and uploaded onto Flickr August 10th.

Keyspan Plant "Big Allis" Sold to Trans-Canada

According to an article published this past Monday by Newsday, National Grid has sold the "Big Allis" Ravenswood Keyspan Plant located just opoposite Roosevelt Island, in LIC, Queens, to Trans-Canada. The sale is subject to state and federal regulatory approvals, and clearance under U.S. anti-trust and foreign investment laws. National Grid said it expects to complete the deal by late summer.

The text of the Newsday article can be linked to HERE. Nobody in NYC really expected the plant to be sold and dismantled as it is one of the only remaining plants servicing all of NYC.

How Would Roosevelt I. Change if Keyspan Plant Sold to Developers?

There is an article in today's NY Daily News , February 29, 2008, that included the news that the Ravenswood Keyspan Plant is up for sale. As stated in the article if it would be sold to real estate developers it is possible the plant could be taken down.

This is highly unlikely as the plant is one of only a few plants generating power for NYC. But can you imagine if the plant were dismantled and this area of Long Island City developed for residential use how it would impact Roosevelt Island?

The change in views alone would alter the real estate desirability (and affordability) of the island not to mention severly increase the air quality of the island and all of Western Queens.

Roosevelt Island, the Ravenswood Keyspan Plant and Asthma Alley

Oct 6 - Portrait

Over the last few weeks while taking one of my kids to Saturday morning soccer at Capobianco Field you can’t help but notice the Keyspan Plant across the East Chanel. Its formal name is the Ravenswood Keyspan Generating Station. With the demise of the Manhattan power plant just South of the United Nations this plant and that at 14th Street in Manhattan are the two major generation plants along the East River

When we moved here to the Island we immediately were concerned about the plant but were told that RIOC had once tested the island for the level of EMFs generated (electro magnetic fields) and it was determined that the levels were low and posed no risk to the children or residents of the island. I never pursued whether any tests were actually run and we were so excited about moving here that we put our worries aside. But sometimes I do still wonder.

The other concern when you live near a plant like this is the pollutants put out by the plant’s stacks day and night. In a March, 2001 WIRE article the following list of such pollutants was recited:

Brown fumes rise above the plant. Chemical odors waft across the river when the wind blows in this direction. The facility's three red-and-white smokestacks spill out nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and particulate matter that help make this area among the worst-polluted in New York State.”

I have never smelled anything from the East Channel or seen actual brown fumes but having lived near the 14th Street Con Ed plant I know asthma levels are higher for those living nearby and as the 2001 article states sections of NorthWest Queens have earned the name “Asthma Alley”. I also recognize the levels of soot landing on my windowsills as similar to that when I lived downtown.

I am now interested in learning when and what studies were ever undertaken regarding asthma and EMF levels for our area. The 2001 article refers to an organization named the Coalition Helping Organize a Kleaner Environment (CHOKE), and described it as a watchdog group that is fighting on behalf of the residents of the Queens neighborhoods near the plant. The website for CHOKE (www.chokequeens.com) appears to be inactive. If I find any organization that succeeded and took over where CHOKE left off I will report it here. In the mean time I will make some inquiries with RIOC, CB8 and RIRA.
