Resident Profiles: Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram

Writing a blog about Roosevelt Island I find myself googling the island quite often to see what I can find. This evening it was a story on a Malasian website, The Star, regarding Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram who is the Assistant Secretary General for Economic Development in the United Nations’ Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Definitely worth reading.

Resident Profiles: Sharon Stern, Poet, Tutor

There is a great story in today's New York Times, January 26, 2009, regarding Roosevelt Island resident Sharon Stern who closes the article by stating "I’m a poet, a tutor, a client of the home care agency and an employer of my staff.” The article highlights a life representative of so many on this island that are success stories even if those who are living those lives want to simply be seen for themselves and not the challenges they face daily.

Resident Profiles - The Roosevelt Island Faces Project

I happened upon the Misha Cohen Photography project blog quite by accident but was happily surprised to see that the 13 images posted thus far are all of individuals that either live here on Roosevelt Island or who work here. A nice opportunity to sit and meet a few of our island neighbors.
The Main Street WIRE has its own Faces project with many many more photos but without the detail that Misha provides about each of his subjects.

Residents in the News: Donna Chenkin

Roosevelt Island resident Donna Chenkin position as director of the Belmont Child Care Association may seem normal enough until you learn this child care facility resides smack in the midst of Belmont Racetrack and exists to provide services to children whose parents work at the track. The overall article in today's Village Voice is quite interesting and goes to show you that an entire world exists beyond the physical track and grandstand.

Resident Profile: Andrew "Tex" Allen

I can not claim to be a music afficionado so I have no idea if Island House resident Andrew "Tex" Allen can claim to be the best known musician living on Roosevelt Island but the blog "Fresh Plays" certainly made me aware of him.

According to Fresh Plays:

"[Allen] has been an important part of the New York music scene for more than 25 years, playing in jazz clubs, forming his own groups, helping write the script for what he calls America’s native or classic music. And lately he’s been a musical ambassador, making two trips to Beirut this year, performing at a jazz festival in Oslo, and traveling to Paris and Hamburg. "
The blog post also references his two siblings who have done pretty well in their careers as well. You may have heard of them .....Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen.

You can visit Mr. Allen's own website by linking HERE. Upon visiting his site it appears that the Fresh Plays post is taken from a much larger and quite in depth article posted on the official website.

Definitely worth reading.

Resident Profiles: The DJs of Coler-Goldwater Radio - 88.1 FM

The City Section of the New York Times, Sunday, February 3, 2008, includes a great article about two men who, despite the hard knocks life has thrown them, are using their time to bring music to others via their on-air radio shows and in turn have also helped themselves. It's a great article and worth reading. The men profiled are Joel Malament and Peter Brenner.

Just another story of how life continues and thrives, despite the odds, at a hospital most Roosevelt Island residents and certainly most NYC residents, know little about.

Island Resident Paul Katz - ReServist Photographer

You see Paul Katz at every Roosevelt Island event clicking away. But did you know that when he is off island he is still using his skills as a photographer. Read Paul's profile over at the ReServe blog.

"ReServe connects New York City’s experienced older adults with stipend-paying jobs that challenge them to use their lifetime skills for the public good."
