A View to a Bridge

My view of the Queensboro Bridge last night as I walked home from the subway station.

  1. The Queensboro Bridge, also known as the 59th Street Bridge, is a cantilever bridge over the East River in New York City that was completed in 1909. It connects the neighborhood of Long Island City in the borough of Queens with Manhattan, passing over Roosevelt Island. It carries New York State Route 25 and once carried NY 24 and NY 25A as well.

  2. I have no comment about the Bridge, but concerned with my building, Westview.

I have lived in the building for over 25 years.

We-WV was advertised in the Wire for an Open Lottery for one bedroom and Studio apts. only and to Section 8.

I find this extremely curious, as our outside waiting list has bee closed for quite some time.

I am not sure about the internal waiting list.

We were told by RY Management that a nefarious "They"-whomever that is "don't want the smaller apartments".

I find that hard to believe, this being Roosevelt Island with our location and our apt. sizes and NYC housing hard to find at "affordable rates".

I also find it curious how our Rent Hike Case that was in NYS Supreme Court for mos. was suddenly dismissed by the Judge on or about 5/21/10.

Two things that are making this WV tenant go-hmmm?!!!!

I know lots of people that would kill for a one bedroom or a Studio in WV.

Something or alot of things as usual don't seem right.

Also the WVTF had not much to say on either topic, no mass info. to the tenants through out the Building.

Nothing to the Tenants on the Open Lottery.

Same old dark, deep secrets going on here.

Maybe we are the next Eastwood or shall I say- "Roosevelt Landings".

  5. I know about Eastwood and I am so sorry, could be the same thing here in Westview.

You guys should contact the Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo.

Some people in WV thinking of doing letters to him.

Do it right away, as Andrew Cuomo is running for Governor.

Good Luck to all of you in Eastwood.

  7. If you are looking for great amenities while you are on vacation, the El Cid Vacation Clubs is one option for you to look forward to. When it comes to security, you will not have to worry about the safety of the whole community because the entrances for these resorts have gates and a 24-hour security to serve people on a daily basis. If you find living in El Cid resorts an excellent choice for you and your family so you can build new relationships with the community, you'll absolutely find this an excellent option for you to look into.

  9. eastwood 5 years after the buy out what do we have well over 100 vacant apartments . now before the buyout lived middle income working famies. who had to move out because they were not put into the lapp program which is rent stabilizated . so as their income went up so did the rent and it will not stop until it hits the market rent so they had to move . so at one time there was a waiting list with over 1000 names on it for people to move here .now there is over 100 to 200 vacant apartment . and the apartments that are now vacant well 95 percent of them is for people getting sec. 8 otherwise they would be vacant also . what a joke.god bless the american tax payer as it is keeping this owner in business. sec8 paying 3 to 4ooo dollars rent . wow. these were good middle class working people who had to move out. this is because of the agreement signed by ron vass and byron gaspard .you 2 did this to eastwood we gave you money for a lawyer and the lawyer worked for you 2 and the people who could not get sec, 8 . so you 2 made sure the the deal is good for you 2 . and the people like you but what about the rest of us , sure put the rest of them in sec 8 . who cares if their incomes may go up and when their kids go to work . who cares we got what we wanted. right ron

  12. the bar sucks .its for the new people on the island

  13. the pizza place on the island sucks. its puzza made by mexicans.

  14. Why does everyone hate the new people so much?

  15. its amazing what WE have allowed THEM to do to OUR island. I remember a time when as a child I was able to run around here without a care in the world. There was SPACE we could get lost for hours at Octagon Park, we built club houses and tree house, we were able to go to the Youth Center where there was real clubs and classes, we were able to walk into the Green Kitchen and ask for a glass of water and wouldn't have to buy anything. Public Safety allowed us to use their bathrooms, and the Bakery sold 60 cent buttered bagels.I find myself worrying now with a family of my own if I will be able to survive another 20plus years here. Slowly we have allowed GREED to rid us of our own private UTOPIA

  16. It's not that we hate the new people... it's just that they are a reminder of what we lost

  17. Does anyone have an idea how long it would take (realistically) to get from RI to the Guggenheim Museum (F train and the Lexington)? I have a friend coming from Italy as a visiting conductor at the Met for 6 months and I am confortable suggesting he consider a sublet on RI. Do you think this commute is reasonable. His sons will attend school at 96th and 5th (near the museum)

  18. We, the old timers, well alot of us don't hate the newcomers, it is the attitude- some of you look at us like you may catch something from us.

You have to remember, alot of us have been here for over 25 years and remember the Island when it was for the Working and Middle class and that is the reason the land was developed in the late 60's under the Nelson A. Rockefeller Admin. for "Safe Affordable Housing for Everyone". They wanted this Island, named for FDR, so that the working class in the city could have an AFFORDABLE place to live.

We have seen our major green open spaces disappear, the smaller, everyone together and join together feeling and protests against wrongs go right out the window.

Not to mention that for the WIRE buildings, our stores are gone, most of them and our part of Main street is a mess.

    That is what we hate.

Also the dogs everywhere, when we moved here 28 years ago this mo. no dogs were allowed anywhere on this island.

Lose your attitudes about us, Trellis, etc. or go back to wherever you can afford, as now alot of us cannot even afford to be here and we settled the Island when the UES and UWS people laughed at this island.

  19. yes i was in trellisas eating with my wife ,when a freind was at another table i was happy to see him. we were talking and there were a few of the new people who have moved to the island .you know what i mean so they looked at us and said i was rude as i was talking to someone at another table . i told him to move the hell off the island . go back to the upper east side . i hate you all this was for at one time for mixed income, but no move its for these new people i am so sorry the people in eastwood did not fight to stop this from happending . but thanks to ron vass . he signed the agreement as long aS IT WAS GOOD FOR HIM RON GO TO HELL

  20. THIS island will become less and less black and hispanc.as all the new people are white.this is what rioc wanted i am going to see andrew cumo about what is going on on this island and the agreement that was signed by ron vass of the eastwood building committee. i am sure there was underhanded things that went on this whole byeouy and agreement happand in less them 7 months .

    ReplyDelete
  21. yes they are closing colder because they want to build high rent buildings do you see the guy with no legs who hangs out near the subway . as all these new people come home .off the subway do you really think these new people on the island want to see him there. yea right the owners would love to stop him from staying there , but they know if they say something all the old timers on the island will give them hell,

    ReplyDelete
  22. hey ron vass, how do you feel that hundreds of good working famies have had to move out of eastwood because of the agreement you made with the owers. but you dont care do you ron . as long as you got what you wanted.by the way ron can you give me back the money i gave you for the lawyer. who helped you and did nothing for me. just for that you should be put in jail taking money from people for a lawyer when people going into sec 8 did not need a lawyer at all .the money we gave you went to for a lawyer for the people getting lapp . just for that you should be put in jail

  25. i hate what became of this island with you new people here .go to hell i hate you stay on the upper east side .this island was made for low and middle income people with affordable rents .not for you people .i hate you all .

  26. Wow I just moved here from Finance... I have to say, I thought the rent in Eastwood was INSANE, but with a small child, I wanted to move somewhere more family oriented, and had more of a community...

I love Trellis being across the road, and hell it's a diner, not some 5* thing, but you can't beat it for the price and convince... Not to mention they have an awesome turkey club for what? $8??

I will say this though, the 'interview' process to move here was INSANE. I've never been subjected to such a vetting before in my life. I really have to wonder what the hell is going on.....

But I do like it here, and the feeling of community, even if I'm one of these new people, but believe me, I'm not the jerk telling people off...

  27. you are cazy to pay the rent in eastwood .for the rent you are paying in eastwood you can go to mahann. park where you get a door man a gym and a pool and a much much better class of people . see you will soon find out that eastwood is a high rental projest. most of the people are living on welfare. ssi . disablily.and many more goverment handouts the joke is on you . you are the fool paying the rent you are paying as 90 percent of the people living in eastwood get sec. 8 . because who the hell in their right mind would pay these kind of rent . not in eastwood thats for sure . dont worry you soon will see what i am talking about , good luck

  28. james you are so right about eastwood , where else in the world can you live in a 3000 dollar a .month apartment for free with no job welcome to eastwood. god bless america

    ReplyDelete
  29. most of the new people who move into eastwood stay for up to one year . they then see what a joke it is to pay that cazy rent so they move . the same will happend to you wait and see .

    ReplyDelete
  30. the only reason i live i live in eastwood is because i get sec 8 . the apartment rents for 3.200.00. i pay 265.00 and sec 8 pays the rest.god bless america even if i had the money to pay the 3.200.00 i would not be paying it to live in eastwood thats for sure . too many low lifes live there

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have only lived on Roosevelt Island for about 4 years plus and started this blog two plus years go.

Jose - I must admit while I knew Sec. 8 covered a good percentage of the rents for those that qualified I never knew it was that much. I dont know your situation and that is your business but may I ask what size is your apartment that rents on the open market for $3200?

    ReplyDelete
  32. to ri360 i have a 3 bedroom . but most 3 bedroom apartments are going for 3500 to 3800 it depens on the location in the building .4 bedrooms in eastwood go for 4.000.00 and up . cazy right thats why there are over 100 vacant apartments in eastwood . who the hell is going to pay that kind of rent to live in eastwood see its a good thing sec 8 is paying these rents . if this ever got out in the newspapers the people would go cazy that people are livibg in 3 and 4.000/00 apartments and the tax payers are paying for it what a joke . see i have a very low paying job i have 4 kids and i do not want a job where i can make more money because the more i make the more rent i pay see i will have to pay 30 percent of my income so i must keep it real low many of the middle income people who were living in eastwood had to move because they had to pay 30 percent of your gross income that before taxes see just think if you were paying 30 percent of your gross income for rent . i am sure you would not be happy . see sec 8 is good for people with low income and people on a fixed income but not for middle income people and this is what happend in eastwood middle income good hard working people had to move out because they kept paying 30 percent of their income and it never stops until you are paying the market rent, this is why there are over 100 vacant apartments. this is all due to ron vass and his eastwood building commitee they sold out the middle income people in eastwood . he and the rest of the members of the ebc got rent stabilzated apartments while the low income got sec 8 which is fine but what about the middle income no one cared about them,so there you have it eastwood has low income welfare ssi and all goverment handouts then you have the new people moving in paying, the market rent but they move out within a year see there is no middle income people only if they got a rent stabilzated apartment like ron vass and the people in the ebc but for the middle income workers who were placed into sec 8 . most of them no longer live here thanks to ron vass .this is why i must keep my income very low wht the hell should i pay more in rent let sec8 pay it .of should i say let the tax payers pay it the owner is happy about this because he is getting his 3 and 4.000.00 reny everymonth cazy righ
